Charitable churnings
Charity begins at home or so goes the famous adage. There seems to be a sense of nobility in doing something that helps others. To add to the sense of nobility, you often hear of Ivy League grads or top honchos from a leading company chucking it all up to spend their life doing charitable work as they find it more fulfilling. I greatly respect and admire such a noble decision. Setting aside the love for lucre and opting to live a life with the less underprivileged takes a certain amount of dare and conviction that may be found lacking in most people.

The flip side of the coin is what rankles me no end. There are many con artists out there who are more than happy to present a sorry picture to reap the benefits they can squeeze out of such admirable people. I have seen for myself how people present a very different picture from actual reality to avail of benefits offered to the needy. I have read reports of people who would put an Oscar winner to shame with the intensity of their performance about their suffering. I have read articles of people from well to do families addicted to begging – they travel to their chosen location, change into their ‘work clothes' and beg! It’s a profession for them. They most likely have storage lockers stuffed with wads of cash. And it’s tax free too! All these people manage to get money preying on the charitable streak in their victims.

It is very important to be discerning while embarking on the charitable road. I feel that segregating the needy from the fake ones is half the job done. That way the help and sacrifice of well-meaning souls will reach the right people. Sounds simple, but it is equally simple for the con artist who sets out to fleece people in the guise of needing your help.
