2011 was a good year

January 9th, 2012

Donating your money, time and sharing your love is something that has been growing in popularity, and thank God for that. According to the 2011 CAF Donation Calendar the world has become more generous and more compassionate. The percentage of people who are willing to donate to a stranger or a particular organisation has increased by 2%, and 1% more people do voluntary work. The research also shows that the people from the US are those who give the most; this is probably as a result of the many philanthropists like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, who we will talk about later on. The second place goes to Ireland, and Australia takes the third.

The World Donor Index uses data and information from 153 countries, which covers 95% of the population of the Earth. The index measure three different aspects of charity: donating money, donating time (volunteering), and helping a stranger. For 2011 the only index that has experienced a decrease is the amount of money raised for charity. But this is not that surprising, considering the current economic climate. But I wanted to talk a bit about Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, those two billionaires are probably the most giving people on the planet. Bill Gates the man who has managed to bring equality to the world by taking form those who have, in this case those who have sufficient funds to buy personal computers, and he gives it to the poorest. His big heart has helped millions of kids. His “The Giving Pledge” Foundation has been providing almost everything you can imagine to those in need: from access to fresh water, three meals a day, clothing, electricity, computers, desks and storage lockers for schools and community centres and what not. He has even decided to donate most of his wealth to charity rather than simply leaving it to his family. Last year, he donated more than 6 billion dollars and managed to persuade many other billionaires to give some of their money away too.
